AIADMK MLAs Resign, Join TVK – Tamil Nadu Politics Shift

In a dramatic turn of events, three AIADMK MLAs have resigned from the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and promptly joined the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), a move that could reshape the state’s post‑election arithmetic.

The resignations were tendered on Monday to Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar by Madurantakam MLA Maragatham Kumaravel, Dharapuram MLA Sathyabama and Perundurai MLA Jayakumar. All three lawmakers were reportedly close to the AIADMK faction led by former ministers C.V. Shanmugam and S.P. Velumani.

Within hours of handing over their letters, the three ex‑AIADMK legislators met Minister Aadhav Arjuna and formally became members of TVK, signalling an immediate expansion of Chief Minister Joseph Vijay’s party after the recent Assembly elections.

The TVK, which contested 233 seats and initially secured 107 seats, fell short of the 118‑seat majority needed to form a government. It therefore turned to external support, securing an alliance with the Indian National Congress, which was given two ministerial berths, as well as backing from the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). The Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI‑M) also pledged unconditional outside support.

At the same time, about 25 AIADMK MLAs aligned with the Shanmugam‑Velumani faction had shown a favourable stance toward the TVK government, fuelling speculation of a possible split within AIADMK. Although the Velumani‑Shanmugam group was not included in the cabinet, reports indicate that reconciliation talks have begun between this faction and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, aiming to contain further fragmentation.

The resignations add fresh uncertainty to Tamil Nadu’s legislative arithmetic. With Vijay already having vacated the Tiruchy East seat, the state now faces four vacant constituencies – Madurantakam, Dharapuram, Perundurai and Tiruchy East – raising the likelihood of multiple by‑elections in the coming months.

Political observers are watching closely to see whether additional MLAs from the Velumani‑Shanmugam camp might follow suit, potentially triggering further shifts in the Assembly’s composition.

The TVK’s coalition arrangement, which includes Congress, VCK, IUML and external support from CPI and CPI‑M, remains fragile. Any further defections from AIADMK could tilt the balance of power, especially if by‑elections swing in favour of TVK or its allies.

AIADMK’s internal dynamics continue to evolve. While the Velumani‑Shanmugam faction has not secured cabinet positions, ongoing reconciliation talks with Palaniswami suggest an attempt to present a united front and prevent a mass exodus of party members.

Sources indicate that the three resigning MLAs were previously part of the Shanmugam‑Velumani camp, which had shown a favourable stance toward the TVK government. Their departure underscores the growing influence of the ruling party among erstwhile opposition legislators.

Analysts note that the by‑election timeline could be crucial. With the Assembly’s strength potentially altered, TVK may seek to capitalize on the vacancies to secure a clearer majority, while AIADMK aims to stem the tide of defections and retain its core base.

In the broader context, Tamil Nadu’s post‑election scenario remains fluid. The TVK government, led by actor‑turned‑politician Joseph Vijay, continues to consolidate its position through strategic alliances and now, through direct recruitment of former AIADMK legislators.

The resignation of three AIADMK legislators and their swift entry into TVK marks a significant shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, intensifying the stakes ahead of impending by‑elections. Both TVK and AIADMK will now navigate a delicate balance of alliances and internal cohesion.
